Essex: Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia high fives Phebe Biggar after one of the fifth-grade classes had their picture taken with Pedroia at Essex Elementary School Thursday afternoon. Essex Elementary School secured the visit from Pedroia after a group of local residents and members of the school community won the Jimmy Fund's Rally Against Cancer contest last month by raising $34,125 for cancer research on behalf of 2-year-old Brodie Tolo of Martin Street, who has been diagnosed with leukemia. The group, named Brodie's Buddies, included 500 contributors and beat out more than 473 other groups representing schools and offices across the state for the Pedroia visit. Brodie has two older brothers attending Essex Elementary School.Photo by Mary Muckenhoupt/Gloucester Daily Times Thursday, May 15, 2008
