Update: Police confirm device 'not dangerous'

Gloucester Police and Fire Department personnel sealed off an area around Whistlestop Way behind the Railroad Avenue commuter rail station while a representative from the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad examined a suspicious device found there this afternoon.

But the bomb squad representative determined that the device is “not dangerous,” and officials are clearing the scene.

Police initially described the device in radio transmissions as a “piece of pipe with wire sticking out of it,” and officials located it at around 1:30 p.m. adjacent to a clothing donation drop-off box next to the building that houses the Dollar Store.

Officials did not closed any streets in the area, but sealed off the area around the device with crime tape.
