Breaking: Man holding police at bay

A man has barricaded himself in a Beauport Avenue home tonight.

Police had surrounded the house around 9 p.m., and called for ambulance to stand by at 10:45 p.m.

Wtinesses at the scene say there are police snipers on the roofs of neighboring houses, and another sniper in a vehicle in front of the home.

Gloucester police Chief Leonard Campanello and Detective Jeremiah Nicastro are on scene.

Members of North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council's SWAT team are assisting Gloucester police in trying to apprehend the man.

State and local police are mobilizing from a staging area on Gloucester Avenue.State police said all information about the incident had to come from the Gloucester Police Department. Gloucester police Sgt. David Quinn, reached at the station, said he could only confirm that there was an ongoing incident, that the chief was on the scene, and that all information about the situation had to come through the chief.
