Seaport DMO recognizes awardees
Close to 45 members of the business community were on hand at Guiseppe's Restaurant for the recognition and presentation of awards "to those who do more than their share to promote this island as a destination."
The event was Discover Gloucester's first holiday awards party, and those honored included everyone from community volunteers who donate time cleaning up litter at weekends, to a mother-daughter amateur photography team.
The anti-litter bugs — Donna Ardizzoni of Circle Consulting and Bob Gillis of Cape Ann Savings Bank— are part of the "One hour at a Time Gang" of volunteers, and for their weekend labors, they were recipients of the marketing organization's "Good On Ya! Award."
The mother-daughter shutter bugs were Louise Palazzola and her daughter Denise Foley who were honored with special recognition for their winning photograph (a shot of the schooner Ernestina and the Man at the Wheel) that graced the 2011 Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide.
The inimitable Joey Ciaramataro of Capt. Joe and Sons, creator of the GoodMorningGloucester.org blog, was this year's winner of the Golden Sou'wester Award, in memory of Harriet Webster and Peter Prybot, to honor someone who recognizes how fishing and tourism feed off each other to create destination tourism. His sister, Felicia Ciaramataro Mohan, accepted the award for her brother Joey.
The memory of another inimitable Glosta Man, the beloved and legendary Joseph Garland, was honored with the Discover Gloucester Heritage Award for understanding the importance of our maritime heritage and working to spread that history to others. The award was presented to Daisy Nell, one of the founders of the Schooner Festival Committee in 1984 and the 2012 committee chairwoman.
The final award went to the "Volunteer Extraordinaire," and took its winner, Linn Parisi, by surprise. As volunteer director of Discover Gloucester's Board of Directors, Linn's endless efforts on behalf of her beloved island home have for five years continued to grow a combined marketing effort to more efficiently and easily promote Gloucester's potential for destination tourism.
