"Bake it and they'll come," could be the slogan of Gloucester's newly opened Roma Pizza at 99 Western Ave., on the Boulevard. New owner-manager Ray Felice has faced up to stiff local competition the old fashioned way: by producing a better product. At least that's the way Felice, formally with Howard Johnson's and various North Shore pizzerias, sees it. His new Roma "brand" focuses on fresh.
Fresh mozzarella and freshly made tomato sauce, on a thinner, crisper crust. In culinary terms, his Roma product gives a nod to California and New York pies, but bows big-time to Gloucester's educated Italian tastebuds. Felice chose the boulevard location for its proximity to the open harbor, which brings a high volume of pedestrian traffic, especially in the summer, when it becomes a major tourist attraction. In the past, the Centennial corner retail location has changed hands often and, as well as being known as a pizza shop, has also been known as a "Sweet Shop" and a popular high school hangout.
The new Roma is open daily for lunch, dinner, party and personal catering. As well as pizza, it offers an extensive menu featuring homemade soups, sandwiches, cheeseburgers and salads. It not only promises to deliver on taste, but on time to anywhere in Gloucester, for free.
