Small business start-up seminar
The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual day-long seminar for new and prospective business owners on Saturday, Jan. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rockport Inn and Suites, 183 Main Street, Rockport. This year's seminar, "Activating Your Entrepreneurial Spirit," features eight speakers, all experts in their field, presenting a comprehensive overview on all aspects of starting and running a business.
Topics include financing, accounting and record keeping, elements of a business plan, lease negotiations, insurance and deductible retirement plans, marketing, and legal considerations. Over the course of its 22 year history, Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce business seminars have graduated over 800 people, many of whom have gone on to become successful business owners in their communities. Special corporate support for this program is provided by the Rockport National Bank.
The cost is $60, including a continental breakfast and lunch. Early reservations are recommended.

Breakfast speaker to focus on 2010 economic forecast
Frederick S. Breimyer will speak at The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce's first Breakfast Club meeting of the new year on Friday, Jan. 8. at the Elks at Bass Rocks, 97 Atlantic Road, Gloucester. His presentation explores the timely topic: "Is this a Real Economic Recovery," Frederick joined the FDIC as the New England Regional Economist in 2003. His background includes serving as Chief Economist for State Street Corporation (1984-2003), Financial Economist for the First National Bank of Boston (1976-1982), and Staff Economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1970-1976). Currently, he is serving on the boards of the New England Economic Partnership and the Mass Insight Education and Research Institute. He also is a member of the Board of Economic Advisors of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts. Recently, he was appointed to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' newly formed Data Users Advisory Committee. Breakfast will be served promptly at 7:30 a.m. and the program will conclude by 9 a.m..
