Town Talk: Cape Ann banks team up to boost Essex tourism

A group of Cape Ann banks has teamed up with the Essex Merchants Group and the Essex Division of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce to launch a project aimed at promoting the town as a destination for visitors.

In the spirit of small-town business and the "keeping it local philosophy," said Essex Merchants Group organizer Bob Coviello said, the Essex Merchants Group approached local banks to become involved in an ongoing campaign focused on the revitalization of the Essex business community.

A number of Cape Ann banks have made donations toward the refocusing on Essex as a historic, cultural, and scenic destination for tourism and commerce.

Cape Ann Savings Bank has signed on to be the platinum sponsor in the campaign, with the First National Bank of Ipswich, Rockport National Bank and BankGloucester following at the gold level.

The Merchants Group will be reaching out to other Cape Ann banks for inclusion as well.

The money donated by these local banks will solely be used by the Merchants Group to promote Essex after the long disruption caused by intense road reconstruction, said Coviello, owner of Main Street Antiques.

Essex merchants, meanwhile, are encouraging residents to support the banks that are supporting Cape Ann and its communities.

International Week

Manchester Essex Regional Middle and High School is going global — for a week or so, anyway.

From March 13 through 16, the regional school will be celebrating International Week, with students and teachers each day celebrating a different culture and listening to speakers from countries around the world.

If you have traveled recently to a foreign country or regularly travel for business or volunteering and would like to share your experiences, please e-mail Michelle Magaé±a at maganam@mersd.org.

Library programs

Essex's TOHP Burnham Library will host a "knitting fix" night Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring their needles, yarn, a work in progress and any questions.

Manchester Public Library's Hearthside Book Club will be reading "Portrait of a Lady" by Henry James, Jr., Tuesday at 4 p.m.

If non-fiction is more your style, pick up a copy of "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot and join the Non-Fiction Book Club Monday at 7 p.m., also at Manchester Public Library.
