BankGloucester gives Action Inc. a $5,000 boost

BankGloucester's slogan has emphasized that the locally based financial institution is "banking for the community."

Now, bank officials have taken new steps to put their money behind that expression.

With BankGloucester — formerly known as the Gloucester Cooperative Bank — donating $15,000 to various community agencies, bank officials left it up to community residents to determine which local agency would most deserve the biggest boosts. And bank employees carried out that request Friday by making a surprise presentation of the top $5,000 donation to Action Inc., the Gloucester project that serves as a temporary shelter and provides counseling and other services to the needy.

The shelter — located on Pleasant Street and a stone's throw from the bank's headquarters and expansion construction site at Main and Pleasant — was one of three groups to receive a grant of $1,000 or more through the bank's project.

The Sail Gloucester organization received the second prize of $2,000, while Cape Ann Animal Aid received third prize of $1,000.

All three grants were presented on Friday; a dozen other organizations are receiving bank donations of $500 apiece.

The donations were chosen based on balloting by customers and other residents who visited the bank lobby or voted on the bank's Web site at www.BankGloucester.com.
