19 cows struck, killed by tractor-trailers on W.Va. interstate

GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — Nineteen head of cattle were killed early Wednesday when they were struck by tractor-trailers on the interstate after escaping through a broken fence.

The incident happened on Interstate 64 in Greenbrier County just before 2 a.m., according to Sheriff Jan Cahill.

Sheriff's deputies and other emergency personnel were called to the scene, where they discovered that the two tractor-trailers that struck the animals had been traveling in opposite directions, one eastbound and one westbound.

Cahill said both of the 18-wheelers were totaled, and one of the drivers suffered minor injuries in the collision. The names of the drivers were not available.

One of the trucks was hauling pork products, according to the sheriff.

The cattle belonged to High Hill Farm, owned by Gary Tuckwiller, Cahill said. Attempts to reach Tuckwiller by telephone Wednesday were unsuccessful.
