Revolver used in Okla. drive-by murder is still missing

DUNCAN, Okla. — Police are still looking for a .22-caliber revolver used to kill an Australian college student last week, despite a lead from a teenager arrested in the case who said the gun was handed off to someone else.

Michael Dewayne Jones, 17, told Duncan police Lt. Joe Shoemake the gun was given to someone with two brothers in the Stephens County Jail on armed robbery charges, according to a police affidavit.

That led police to search the home of a man who said he'd been visited by the three teens later arrested in the case, but he didn't want to get involved and didn't have the gun. Police did not find the weapon at the man's house.

Chancey Allen Luna, 16, and James Edwards, 15, were also arrested in the Aug. 13 murder of Christopher Lane. The teens were bored and looking for someone to kill when they spotted Lane jogging near his girlfriend's home, prosecutors said.

Luna fired a single shot at Lane from the back seat of a car, as Edwards rode in the passenger seat and Jones drove, investigators said. Police arrested the teens four hours later. Luna and Edwards were charged with first-degree murder; Jones was charged as an accomplice.

Jones has said he is scared for his life and "would get killed" if he talked to police, the affidavit stated.

Jones asked to speak with Shoemake about an hour after the teens' arrest but later told the lieutenant he didn't want to talk. Shoemake told him police needed to find the gun, lest a child find it and get hurt.

That's when police learned the teens had used a .22-caliber revolver in the shooting, according to the affidavit. Jones said he'd hidden the gun inside an air intake on his 2003 black Ford Focus, though officers searching the car did not find the weapon.

Police did find .22-caliber ammunition, as well as a disassembled 12-gauge shotgun under the spare tire in the trunk, according to the affidavit.
