Buffalo Bills linebacker accused of marijuana possession

TONAWANDA, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills linebacker Nigel Bradham, 23, was charged over the weekend with unlawful possession of marijuana following a traffic stop in suburban Tonawanda.

The second-year pro player was pulled over at 2:01 a.m. Saturday for a window tint violation, the police report states. Officer Howard Scholl said he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked Bradham if he had any drugs in the vehicle.

Bradham, driving a car with Florida license plates, initially denied there were drugs in the car. But when the officer again asked Bradham where the drugs were, he "opened the glove compartment and handed me a zip lock baggy," said Scholl. "I asked (Bradham) what was in the zip lock bag and he stated, 'marijuana.'"

Lt. Nicholas Bado said the amount of the drug was too small to hold Bradham, and police issued him an appearance ticket for marijuana possession and a traffic ticket for window tint violation. The police report did not mention any passengers in the Bradham vehicle.

A Tonawanda News reader tipped the newspaper over the weekend that Bradham had  been arrested. A check with the police prompted a press release that redacted Bradham's name, a common procedure for minor criminal violations. But Lieutenant Bado confirmed to the Tonawanda News reporter that Bradham was the subject of the arrest.

Bradham, drafted 105th overall in the 2012 NFL draft out of Florida State, began last year as a Buffalo reserve but saw significant playing time at inside linebacker as the season wore on. He was used mostly as a second-team reserve in pre-season drills and games this summer.

The National Football League Policy handbook states that a player can be subject to a suspension without pay for four regular season games for a first-time violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Bills Vice President for Communications Scott Berchtold didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
