Morning Meditation
Teachers from the ACI-Cape Ann Buddhist Center will conduct silent meditations and discussion on Sundays, starting July 1, at 222 Arts & Wellness Center, 222 Eastern Ave. The first meditation runs from 9 to 9:30 a.m., followed by a tea break with discussion, or if you wish, a walk through the woods, before the second half-hour meditation session starts at 10 a.m. Chairs and yoga equipment are available; please arrive eraly, so all will be quiet for the start of the first meditation session. Homebuyers workshop
The Cape Ann Homeownership Center is offering a First Time Homebuyers Workshop hosted by the Gloucester Housing Authority at 259 Washington St., Gloucester, on Aug. 7 and 8, 14 and 15. The four nights of classes are from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Topics include credit scores, safe mortgages, home inspections, legal issues, and more. Class size is limited and expected to fill quickly. Lebanese picnic
The Lebanese -American community of Cape Ann's 5th annual picnic will be held on Sunday, July 8th, 2012 at Stage Fort Park stating at 11:00 a.m.. Bring your own food, chairs and tables. There will be a common table for Lebanese food. Please make your special dish for all to share. Bring old photos so all can enjoy. There will be children's games. All in all this should be an enjoyable day.
Beach bash
Gloucester United Methodist Church is hosting a SonSurf Beach Bash VBS July 23 to 27, with a family BBQ at noon on Friday, July 27. Ages 4 to 12 are invited to grab your surf board and ride a wave! Learn about clownfish, dolphins, sea turtles. Rummage sales
St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington St. will hold rummage sales on the following Saturdays: July 21, and 28, and Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. Also, the 41st annual yard sale is on Aug. 18. Choose from good quality women's, men's and childrens clothing, accessories and shoes. Books, puzzles and CDs, DVDs and tapes will also be available. Support group
Pathways for Children offers free monthly drop-in parent support group meetings for Cape Ann families of children with special needs. Preregistration is necessary if child care is needed in order to attend. Peer support training
The Northeast Recovery Learning Community (NERLC) provides peer-run support and services to people with psychiatric disabilities throughout the North Shore and Merrimack Valley, and are training facilitators for peer-run self-help meetings on Cape Ann. If you are interested, there will be a training session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 48 Middle St., Gloucester. (parking at 47 Washington St.). The NERLC offers recovery-oriented, trauma informed care and culturally sensitive peer support, both in group settings and on an individual basis. GHS '47 reunion
Gloucester High School Class of 1947 celebrates its 65th reunion July 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Gloucester House. Classmates should send their check now for $45, and note: GHS Class 1947. Church fair
Gloucester United Methodist Church, 436 Washington St., welcomes all Saturday, July 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., when we open the doors to the smell of fresh coffee and donuts. Browse tables of crafts and toys, style yourself in jewelry, thumb through books, peruse white elephants. New this year is our garden table with plants, annuals and perennials selected by our Garden Club, along with gardening accessories. Lunch on a lobster roll, for $11, or a pulled BBQ chicken sandwich for $5. Or big hots dogs for the littles ones, $1.50; chips and drink included.
'Rule of Four'
Cape Ann Museum has extended its popular exhibition, "Rule of Four: Highlights from the Permanent Collection," through the summer. The exhibit features works by 20 artists and craftsmen who have worked on Cape Ann and spotlights works in the museum's growing contemporary collection with an emphasis on recent acquisitions. Adventures program
Eastern Point Day School has collaborated with local artists, mad scientists, and professionals in theater, environmental sustainability, and Marine Biology to create at Summer Adventures Program to remember. The program runs from July 9 — Aug 3, in 4 week-long thematic sessions, in which students participate in fun classroom activities, field experiences, and daily trips to Niles Beach and Braces Cove. The Gloucester Integrated Preschool, which provides developmentally appropriate early education services for children age 3 to 4, is accepting applications for a limited number of fall openings. Free flying lessons
For father and sons, father and daughters, the sky really is the limit when you learn to fly radio controlled model airplanes. The lessons are free at Good Harbor Beach parking lot June 1 to Sept. 30, weekday evenings from 6 p.m. to sundown. Northeast Behavioral Health (NBH) Healthy Streets Outreach Program provides HIV testing, hepatitis C information, access to drug treatment, overdose prevention and Narcan training. Cape Ann Animal Aid holds an Overlooked Pets Adoption Day on the third Thursday of every month. Adoption fees are reduced and are completed on a first-come, first-served basis, and all regular adoption requirements apply. Cape Ann Weight Loss Clinic provides a program based on individual goals, determined through health assessment. Northern Essex WIC
Northern Essex WIC (Women, Infants and Children) is a program providing nutrition and health education, healthy food and other services free to Massachusetts families who qualify. The Gloucester office is in the Gloucester Family Health Center, 302 Washington St.
Drivers needed
The Rose Baker Senior Center assists senior citizens in need of transportation to medical appointments. Drivers are needed for local rides to Addison Gilbert Hospital, the Cape Ann Medical Center, other local medical offices, as well as Beverly Hospital, Lahey Clinic and hospitals in Boston. VNA Care Network
VNA Care Network, a nonprofit home health care, hospice and wellness provider, provides stipends to women with breast cancer who need financial assistance for medications, co-payments, transportation to treatment and services to help increase access to treatment and support recovery. Women must be residents of eastern or central Massachusetts to qualify. This program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Clothes Closet
The Clothes Closet, in the basement of St. Ann School, corner of Prospect and Pleasant streets, is open Saturdays, from 9 a.m.. to 1 p.m. This is made possible through the volunteer efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Holy Family Parish. Addison Gilbert Hospital needs volunteers. Positions are available in the hospital's gift shop for all shifts, including days, evenings and weekends. The Cape Ann Military Family Support Group meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Major Fred W. Ritvo Veterans Center, 12 Emerson Ave. in Gloucester. Those with family and friends serving in the military are welcome to attend. Those wishing to attend to support our military by working on special projects are also invited; all are welcome. Parent mentors
Pathways' Cape Ann Families is seeking men and women to volunteer as parent mentors. This program has served stressed and isolated parents of the Gloucester and Cape Ann Community for 20 years. Volunteers participate in a five-week Winter Parent Mentor Training, after which each will be matched with a parent, starting a year-long mentorship and friendship. Dog licenses
Dog licenses are now available at the Gloucester City Clerk's Office during regular business hours: Monday-Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $22.50 per dog, if paying in person, and $23.50, if paying by mail. Payment can be made by cash or check. Rabies vaccination certificates must be presented at the time of registration. A $10 late fee is no imposed. Call 978-281-9720.

Arts scholarship
The Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe has established a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a Cape Ann high school senior who has been accepted to a college theater arts program. Prerequisites include participation in high school drama programs and involvement in one CAST production.
