More than 50 children and adults got down and dirty one morning last week.
All volunteers, organized by the North Shore United Way: Women in Action, they help start more than 5,000 seedlings for The Food Project’s North Shore Farms in the greenhouse of Glen Urquhart School in Beverly.
Since 1991, The Food Project has worked with more than 150 teenagers and thousands of volunteers to farm 40 acres in Beverly, Boston, Lincoln, and Lynn. Food from the farms is distributed through the project’s community supported agriculture programs and farmers markets, and donated to local hunger relief organizations. The young people working in the programs participate in all of these distribution streams, giving them valuable job experiences and a personal connection to the food system and issues of food justice.
Women in Action is dedicated to supporting programs that promote healthy eating, sound nutrition and physical activities for underserved children and their families on Cape Ann and the North Shore. For more information visit www.nsuw.org/women.html.
