Vampire Nights!

Hammond Castle Museum's annual spooky Halloween fundraiser weekend features WJD Productions' Bill and Lisa DiGiuseppe's evenings of vampires preying on the living in the castle overlooking the stormy North Atlantic, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28, 29, from 7 to 11 p.m. Your help is requested in protecting these inhabitants from certain death! The parking's free at Stage Fort Park, and the city of Gloucester is providing free shuttle service from the park to the castle. (Not parking at the castle!) Arachnophilia!

"If the enemy of my enemy is my friend, then spiders are among man's very best friends," says Mass Audubon's Chris Leahy, who'll present 'Spiders! Learning to Love Them,' at Sawyer Free Library on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. Sponsored by the Gloucester Garden Club and free and open to all ages (including kids!) this evening with Leahy — a recognized author and authority on spiders, casts our amazing arachnid neighbors in a whole new, lovably learned light!

Restaurant Week

Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce's Restaurant Week 2011 started this Sunday, Oct. 23 and runs through this Thursday, Oct. 27, with participating restaurants offering prix fixe three course dinner menus, including appetizers, salads, three entree choices and dessert selections for the low price of $25.11 (excluding beverage, tax and gratuity). Pumpkin carving

The Holy Family Women's Guild will meet Tuesday, Nov. 1, 7 p.m., in the Msgr. Sullivan Hall. Members will discuss new plans for the Christmas fair. A pie bar will follow. Language Screenings

Beverly Hospital is conducting free pediatric speech/language screenings in their outpatient clinic on Herrick St. through Nov. 11, for children 18 months to seven years. Thirty minute screenings identify if a child is developmentally appropriate in terms of speech, language, or feeding skills. Early intervention is key! Butterfly garden

On Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. the Friend Room of the Sawyer Free Library premieres Kim Smith's new series of video specials for Cape Ann TV, titled "Through the Garden Gate, featuring "The Butterfly Garden at Willowdale Estate." Girls night out!

West Parish PTO will sponsor a 'Girls Night Out' on Friday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Magnolia Library. Dogtown trails

On Thursday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon, Mark Carlotto leads a 4 mile exploration of Dogtown, including "Whale's Jaw," an unusual glacial rock formation deposited over 10,000 years ago in the midst of this mysterious, long-abandoned, fabled colonial settlement. Mark, author of "The Dogtown Guide," shares learning of Dogotwn's haunting history. Prepaid reservations are required by Monday, Nov. 14. Essex Heritage members $9/Non-members $15. Food For Fines

The Sawyer Free Library is accepting Food For Fines from Nov. 1 — 21. Just bring in a bag of groceries and your overdue fines will be erased. This program is for overdue fines only and not for lost or billed books. Items such as boxed rice, canned fruit and veggies, canned fish or meat, peanut butter, dry pasta, cereal, soup, etc. will be accepted and collected for the Cape Ann Food Pantry. Holiday meal baskets

The Open Door Food Pantry needs help providing holiday meal baskets to local families. A donation of $25 provides a turkey, potatoes, butternut squash, apples, stuffing, cranberry and more. Halloween dance

On Saturday, Oct. 29, Veterans' Memorial School PTO holds its Halloween fundraiser dance from 6:30 to midnight at the D.E.S. Holiday Fair

The Women's Community Club of Magnolia holds their holiday fair fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Jones Hall, Magnolia Library Center, with handmade crafts, gifts, jewelry, a bake table, mulled cider, coffee, punch, donuts, and fun for kids, with cookie decorating, face painting, sand art, and pictures with Santa. Harvest Fest

Union Congregational Church, 3 Norman Ave, Magnolia, holds its Harvest Fest on Sunday, Nov. 6, from noon to 2 p.m. with face painting, scarecrow making, pumpkin painting, lawn games, balloon animals, Thanksgiving card making, and harvest crafts. Absentee voting

Absentee voting for the Nov. 8 election is now open at the City Clerk's Office at City Hall. Any registered voter not able to make it to the polls on Election Day may come in and vote from now until noon on Monday, Nov. 7. Mail-in requests for ballots are also accepted. When mailing a request, include your name, voting address, mailing address (if different), date of birth, phone number/e-mail and signature, and a ballot will be promptly mailed. Halloween party

On Sunday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m., there will be a free kids Halloween party outdoors in the parking lot behind KidsUnlimited, Local Colors, Harbor Goods and Island Art & Hobby. (entrance on Hancock Street). Kids can join in games, activities, music, and dance with Dawn Koller. There'll be costume prizes, treats and a fab time for Gloucester trick 'r Treaters of all ages. Docksiders comedy

The Docksider's first comedy show will take place Thursday, Nov. 10, at Bass Rocks Elks Club, Atlantic Avenue. The event will be hosted by Hank Morse of 105.7 WROR's "Loren and Wally" show, and will star comedian Tony V. with Artie Januario and Graig Murphy. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. show. Cheerleaders Halloween party

Tax volunteers

Action Inc. needs volunteer tax assistants to help low-income households. The Gloucester site will be open various days and evenings. Tax assistants help clients prepare and electronically submit their federal and state income tax returns, identifying tax credits for which they are eligible. No experience necessary. For the troops

These goods and services are always needed by the Gloucester Veterans Office.

Knitters wanted: The office has received requests from troops in Afghanistan and Iraq for hand or machine knit helmet liners, scarves, neck gaters and socks. Contact the office for specifics.

Goods needed: The office is accepting goods, including AT&T telephone cards and donations for mailing boxes to send to the troops, as well as military families in need of aid.

Knitters, yarn needed

Do you knit or crochet or know somebody who does? Would you like to give the gift of warmth to the diners at The Open Door Christmas dinner this holiday season? Seacoast fair

Seacoast Nursing and Rehab center hosts its annual holiday fair on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and rental tables are available to vendors. The Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet, in the basement of St. Ann School, corner of Prospect and Pleasant streets, is open Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Clothes Closet is made possible through the volunteer efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Holy Family Parish. Counseling for veterans

Many veterans experience difficulty in adjusting to problems in civilian life after serving in combat. The Lowell Vet Center offers counseling at the Gloucester Veterans Center for area veterans and their families, free of charge. Healthy Streets Program

Northeast Behavioral Health (NBH) Healthy Streets Outreach Program provides HIV testing, hepatitis C information, access to drug treatment, overdose prevention and Narcan training. Isabel Babson Memorial Library

Isabel Babson Memorial Library, 69 Main St., is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Named for Gloucester's first midwife, the library's books feature all aspects of family life including maternity, child care and women's health. Wellspring House, 302 Essex Ave., will host an open house to celebrate 30 years of service Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited. Soup and cider will be served. Guests are also encouraged to attend the annual meeting following the open house at 7 p.m.

Senior Day Care

The Council on Aging sponsors Social Day Care sessions with supervised activities and programs three days a week, for seniors who are homebound and isolated, at the Rose Baker Senior Center, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Daily lunch and snacks are included. Yoga for seniors

The Gloucester Council on Aging provides gentle mat yoga sessions Tuesdays at 10 a.m., chair yoga on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m., and Thursday yoga at 10 a.m. each week at the Rose Baker Senior Center. Call 978-281-9765.

Handyman for seniors

The Council on Aging has a new handyman, a retired carpenter, available to help Gloucester and Rockport seniors with inside and outside work at a reduced cost. Bay View Brotherhood

On the second Tuesday of every month, Bay View Brotherhood Club Inc. holds a meeting at Brotherhood Club Hall, 889 Washington St., at 7 p.m.

Rotary Club

Every Tuesday, the Rotary Club meets at 12:15 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester.

CAMEN group

Homebound services

SeniorCare nutrition

SeniorCare serves lunch daily at the senior luncheon centers at 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. A $2 donation is requested. Food stamp screening
