---- — Dozens of friends of the late Joe Garland gathered informally at The Gloucester House restaurant on Sept. 30 to mark what would have been his 90th birthday.
Gloucester’s consummate historian, storyteller and sailor, Garland died at age 88 in August 2011.
The Ivy-League educated Garland, a graduate of Harvard University, became a Gloucester Times columnist, a historian and author of 24 books. He also became a community activist championing myriad causes from saving the working waterfront to protecting Addison Gilbert Hospital.
This latest gathering, organized by word of mouth, was just the beginning of more to come. Helen Garland agreed to consider the idea of a lyceum to continue the interests so many people shared with her husband.
