Valentine breakfast

The 38th annual Meals on Wheels Valentine breakfast will take place Tuesday, Feb. 14, 7 to 9:30 a.m., at the Gloucester House restaurant, 63 Rogers St., Gloucester. Democrats caucus

On Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. Democrats in Essex will hold a caucus at the Senior Center (17 Pickering St.) to elect delegates to the Massachusetts Party's nominating convention for 2012 U.S. Senate Democratic primary. Democrats registered before Dec. 31, 2011 are eligible, and the caucus will elect two delegates and two alternates, to be divided equally between men and women. Those not elected, who meet the qualifications, may apply to be add-on delegates in the following categories: youth, minority and disabled. Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce's next "Business After Hours" networker will be hosted by Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. The evening provides members an opportunity to meet in a relaxed atmosphere and make business connections. Girls' book group

TOHP Burnham Library welcomes girls, grades 7 to 10, to join a month long book group reading 'Heist Society' by Ally Carter, a fast paced. masterful novel of intrigue and suspense you won't want to miss! Spaulding Fund

Spaulding Education Fund, a private, nonprofit established to aid Manchester Essex public schools, relies on private donations. Tax-deductible contributions may be made at www.spauldingeducationfund.org or mailed to the Spaulding Education Fund, Box 192, Manchester, MA 01944.

Monthly lunches

Seniors age 60 and over are invited to lunch at the Essex Senior Center on the first and third Thursday of the month. Lunch is provided by SeniorCare. A $2 donation is requested. For reservations, call 978-768-7932.

Museum passes

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, tickets to the Museum of Fine Arts are now available. The passes are date specific, permitting two people entrance for $7 each, and may be reserved up to a week in advance by calling 978-768-7410 or e-mailing mes@mvlc.org.

Yankee Networkers

Yankee Networkers Chapter of BNI, a business referral organization, meets every Wednesday at the Farm Bar & Grill, 233 Western Ave. Business breakfasts are served from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Visitors are invited.

Business counseling

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce offers free small-business counseling at its office at 33 Commercial St., Gloucester, on the first and third Thursday of the month. Achievement award

Donations are being accepted for the Neil G. Ramsden Academic Achievement Award — a memorial award given by the teachers of Essex Elementary to Essex high school seniors who graduated from EES, and are enrolling in at least a two-year program of study. The award is based on academic achievement, citizenship and service. Donations may be made to Essex Elementary School with 'Achievement Award' in the memo, c/o Susan Hardy, Essex Elementary School, 12 Story St. Essex, MA 01929.

Winter parking ban

The winter parking ban will be in effect from now until April 1. During the ban, no parking is allowed from midnight to dawn on any street in town with the exception of Pickering Street. On Pickering Street, all-night parking is allowed only on the odd-numbered side of the street. Violators may receive a $25 parking ticket. Vehicles will be subject to towing during a storm.

Blood pressure clinics

The Essex Council on Aging holds a blood pressure clinic the third Thursday of each month, 10:30 a.m., at 17 Pickering St.

Maritime heritage event

On Saturday, Feb. 18, 1 to 3 p.m., the Essex National Heritage Commission, Maritime Gloucester and NOAA present NOAA maritime archaeologists Deborah Marx and Matthew Lawrence, with a 45-minute screening of the Science Channel's Viewers Choice Award winning documentary, "The Wreck of the Steamship Portland," followed by a presentation on Sanctuary maritime heritage projects and a tour of the Sanctuary's exhibit. The event is open to the public at Maritime Gloucester, 23 Harbor Loop. Reservations are required by Feb. 17. Cost is $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers. Peer Pals

The Manchester Essex Regional School District will hold screenings for all 3 and 4 year-old Manchester and Essex children whose parents are interested in the district's for preschool Peer Pal program for 2012-2013, on Wednesday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Manchester Memorial Elementary School. Current Peer Pals will receive priority in the lottery for 2012-2013 and need not participate in the screening. To register your child by phone, call Rosie Read at 978-525-6060.

New Year knitting

Knit in the New Year! A multi-generational group meets 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the T.O.H.P Burnham Library that runs until Feb. 15. All levels of knitters are welcome, from grade 2 and up. Snacks and yarn will be provided. Bring your own needles. Call 978-768-7410.
