It was just another school
And just another time
And just another shooting
And just another crime
On just another day
In just another year
And just another lesson
In violence and fear.
What do we tell the children
All those who must go on
When words are merely words
Cannot erase the wrong?
What do we tell the children
How do we ease their pain
Now that their trust is broken
Our words will be in vain?
What do we tell the children
How do we share their grief
Give them new hope for living
Restore their old belief?
What do we tell the children
How do we bear their cross
And lift upon our shoulders
The burden of this cross?
It was just another school
And just another time
And just another shooting
And just another crime.
What do we tell the children
All those who must go on
When words are merely words
Cannot erase the wrong
And our laws still maintain
Man’s right to own a gun?
