Poetry reading, 7:30 p.m., Gloucester Writers Center, 126 East Main St., Gloucester. Erica Funkhouser reads poems she is writing in response to “The Dream Songs” by John Berryman. Funkhouser teaches the advanced poetry writing workshop at MIT and lives in Essex.

Combined screening at Manchester Memorial Elementary School, for 3- to 4-year-olds from Manchester and Essex with: 1.possible developmental delays/special education. 2. PEER Pals consideration for 2013-14 school year. Call 978-525-6060 for appointment.

“The Love Letters of John and Mary Adams,” 7:30 p.m., First Congregational Church, 39 Main St. Followed by a Winfrey’s chocolate buffet. Presented by Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum. Features Adams’ scholars and living history performers Patricia Bridgman and Thomas Macy. Advance tickets are $10 per person; visit www.essexshipbuildingmuseum.org. $15 at door, $5 for students.

Essex Democratic Committee Caucus, 9:45 a.m., Senior Center, 17 Pickering St. Doors close at 10 a.m. To elect delegates for the Massachusetts Democratic Convention to be held on June 1 in Lowell. Refreshments served. Call Lysa Leland at 978-768-7006.
