Chili & Chowder Fest to benefit Wellspring House, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., First Parish Church, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 1 Chapel Lane, Manchester. $10 for adult, $5 for children under 12. Chili, chowder, beverages, hot dogs and assorted desserts. Free parking available behind Town Hall. www.firstparishchurch.org.

Official ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Children’s Room, 2 to 3:30 p.m. Library Trustees will thank the community for its support of the 125th Anniversary Capital Campaign and honor Sara Collins on her 25th anniversary as children’s librarian. Refreshments and entertainment.

Monday, April 8

Nonfiction Book Group, 5 p.m., Manchester Public Library. Topic: “Blood, Bones and Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef” by Gabrielle Hamilton.

Tuesday, April 9

Harold Burnham & Friends discuss building the schooner Ardelle, 7:30 p.m., Waterline Center, Essex Shipbuilding Museum, 66 Main St. Burnham shares photos from Ardelle’s voyage to Washington, D.C., to collect 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowships. $8 for members, $10 for nonmembers.

Wednesday, April 10

Thursday, April 11

Poetry Reading with Barbara Flaherty and Susan Gabriel, 6:30 p.m., Manchester Public Library. Both poets have recently published their own books of poetry.

“Genealogy Research: Finding and Documenting Your Ancestors,” presented by Barbara J. Beake and Peg Plummer of Essex Society of Genealogists, 11 a.m., Essex Senior Center, 17 Pickering St., Essex. Free and open to the public.

Monday, April 15

Manchester Public Library closed for Patriot’s Day. Regular hours, 1 to 8 p.m. resume Tuesday, April 16.

Wednesday, April 17

Drumlin Farm’s baby farm animals visit Manchester Public Library, two sessions: preschoolers at 10:30 a.m., and kindergarten through fifth-grade at 11:30 a.m. Register at 978-526-2016 or scollins@mvlc.org.
