A Little Leaguer's Prayer

Dear God,

I want to be a ballplayer ...

It won’t be any sweeter,

If I could field like Derek Jeter ...

Hit like Mantle, both ways,

Catch like Campanella,

Throw hard like Bobby Feller ...

And, also Lord,

Pitch corners like Whitey Ford ...

I want to be rich in my youth

And famous like Ol’ Babe Ruth

But, God — If this is asking too much,

Let me hit this one in the clutch ...

Just this once, okay?

You see, my dad’s here and it’s

Father’s Day.
