I Would

I could get out my old tap shoes

And dance loudly the night away

I’d awaken my sleeping muse

But then deny I caused the fray

Who would know?

Ignore high principles of mind

Speak the truth however mean

Rid myself of actions kind

Leave my victims to wail and keen

Who would know?

Be creative with my math

Mail in an errant tax return

Dare to risk their ire and wrath

Rules and laws I’d gaily spurn

Who would know?

Be cavalier then with truth and balm

Run roughshod through fields of dreams

Face this world with a mask of calm

Knowing well naught is what it seems

Who would know?

If I should divest myself of lofty goals

I ask you, Gentle Friends and Kindly Souls,

Who would know?
