Essex Goings On

Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Press releases may be sent to Goings on, Gloucester Daily Times, 36 Whittemore St., Gloucester, MA 01930, sent via email to gdt@gloucestertimes.com or faxed to 978-282-4397. Please include a contact person’s name and telephone number and send at least two weeks prior to the event. The Times will do its best to run the announcement at least once prior to the event. Symphony Singers auditions

Cape Ann Symphony Singers are holding auditions for all vocal parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) Tuesday, Sept. 3, and Thursday, Sept. 5, 6:45 to 9 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4 Cleaves St., Rockport. Cape Ann Symphony Singers rehearse every Tuesday, Sept. 10-Nov. 19, 7 to 9 p.m., at the UU Church in Rockport. The Singers perform Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 with the Cape Ann Symphony in the Holiday Pops Concert. For an audition, contact Wendy Betts at 978-546-5220 or wendybetts@juno.com.

Film nights

A free Eco-themed Film Series is offered this July on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Studio Barn at the Cox Reservation, 82 Eastern Avenue (Route 133). Bring a picnic, stroll the scenic grounds before screening; film will be followed by informal conversation with a special guest.

July 17, “Sun Come Up: The Story of the World’s First Climate Refugees,” (2010; 38 minutes) — chronicles the relocation of Carterer Islanders.

July 24, “Family Night: The Legend of Pale Male,” (2009; 85 minutes) — follows the adventures of Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk nesting near Central Park in New York City.

July 31, “The Greenhorns” (2011; 50 minutes) — explores the lives and spirit of America’s young farming community.

Summer meals program

The Open Door Food Pantry will serve free summer meals, to children 18 and under, from now until Aug. 30, at these locations: The Open Door, Riverdale, Willowood and Veterans School. All lunches are served Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A full list of all sites, including teen supper sites may be found online at www.foodpantry.org.
