Essex Goings On

Film nights

A free Eco-themed Film Series is offered this July on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Studio Barn at the Cox Reservation, 82 Eastern Avenue (Route 133). Bring a picnic, stroll the scenic grounds before screening; film will be followed by informal conversation with a special guest.

July 24, “Family Night: The Legend of Pale Male,” (2009; 85 minutes) — follows the adventures of Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk nesting near Central Park in New York City.

July 31, “The Greenhorns” (2011; 50 minutes) — explores the lives and spirit of America’s young farming community.

Summer meals program

The Open Door Food Pantry will serve free summer meals, to children 18 and under, from now until Aug. 30, at these locations: The Open Door, Riverdale, Willowood and Veterans School. All lunches are served Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A full list of all sites, including teen supper sites may be found online at www.foodpantry.org.

New website

The Essex National Heritage Commission has launched the redesign of its website, www.essexheritage.org, to provide visitors, members and partner organizations with more relevant, easy-to-find information on historic, cultural and natural resources in Essex County. The site features an updated look, enhanced features, easier navigation, updated information on sites throughout Essex County, more search options, more highlights from the region’s historic, cultural and natural sites and numerous resources for residents and visitors. An updated Essex Coastal Scenic Byway website at www.CoastalByway.org features sites along the 85-mile state-designated Coastal Byway.

Monthly lunches

Seniors age 60 and over are invited to lunch at the Essex Senior Center on the first and third Thursday of the month. Lunch is provided by SeniorCare. A $2 donation is requested. For reservations, call 978-768-7932.

Bible study

A women’s Bible study with Beth Moore, “James: Mercy Triumphs,” will be held Wednesdays, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of Essex. Child care is available. Call Rama at 978-768-3319.
