Manchester Goings On

Book sale

The Friends of the Manchester Public Library’s annual summer book sale is Saturday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Large selections of fiction, art, sports, boating, nature, travel and more. Movies and classic books at bargain prices. Donations welcome; drop them at the Circulation Desk. Call ahead if you have large donations (more than two bags or boxes of books) at 978-526-7711. No textbooks, magazines or encyclopedias.

Early closing

The Manchester Public Library will close at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, so that the Friends of the Library can set up the book sale.

Zoo passes

The Manchester Public Library is offering passes for the Franklin Park Zoo and the Stone Zoo at reduced rates. Each pass admits six at $6 per adult and $4 per child. Visit hundreds of exotic animals from around the world right in the middle of Boston. Explore the wonders of a tropical rainforest, Australian outback and African savannah. Book groups

This summer the Nonfiction Book Group reads about U. S. Grant. Choose from Grants’ personal memoir, Mrs. Grant’s memoir, or a dual biography on Grant and Twain. On the same subject is “A Disposition to Be Rich: How a Small-Town Pastor’s Son Ruined an American President, Brought on a Wall Street Crash, and Made Himself the Best-Hated Man in the U.S.” by Geoffrey C. Ward. Visit www.library.booksite.com. The Hearthside Book Group will read “John Adams” by David McCullough. All copies available at circulation desk. Groups resume meetings in September. New members welcome.

Summer meals program

The Open Door Food Pantry will serve free summer meals, to children 18 and under, from now until Aug. 30, at these locations: The Open Door, Riverdale, Willowood and Veterans School. All lunches are served Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A full list of all sites, including teen supper sites may be found online at www.foodpantry.org.
