Poets Corner: A Fisherman's Day

It's 2 a.m.

on a misty morn,

I wake from my sleep

and find the coffee warm.

The sea is calm

as we steam to the east,

the net is ready

to engulf its feast.

The sun is rising

splendidly, for all to see,

it makes the heart light,

it sets the soul free.

"Let's set out!"

the captain bellows

and we start to trawl

as our minds begin to mellow.

Time to haul back

after a two-hour tow,

The net is full

and we've filled the hole.

The day is done

as we steam on home.

The work is hard

but it's our own.

This is the story

of a fisherman's day,

it may not be easy,

but, for me, it's the only way.
