Essex Goings On

Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Press releases may be sent to Goings on, Gloucester Daily Times, 36 Whittemore St., Gloucester, MA 01930, sent via email to gdt@gloucestertimes.com or faxed to 978-282-4397. Please include a contact person’s name and telephone number and send at least two weeks prior to the event. The Times will do its best to run the announcement at least once prior to the event. Due to the volume of goings on listings received by the paper, listings are alternated once they run and the same listings are not printed every day.

Summer meals program

The Open Door Food Pantry will serve free summer meals, to children 18 and under, from now until Aug. 30, at these locations: The Open Door, Riverdale, Willowood and Veterans School. All lunches are served Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. No service on July 4. A full list of all sites, including teen supper sites may be found online at www.foodpantry.org.

Free family event

Families with young children are invited to celebrate Shabbat by the lake at PJ Library Hot Diggety Dog Shabbat on Friday, July 26, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Camp Menorah. Rain date is Friday, Aug. 2. Features Shabbat candle lighting and a child-friendly Shabbat service including stories and songs, followed by a free kosher hot diggety dog Shabbat dinner. Vegetarian food available. Families are welcome to go for a swim in the lake from 4 to 5 p.m. Facilities are available to change clothes. All are welcome. Memorial race

The 47th annual S.S. Crocker Memorial Race, held off the coast of Manchester, will take place Saturday, July 13. The race, which is open to all sailboats, is a fun-filled family event. Awards are given for first, second and third in each class. Wood and Fiberglass boats are welcome. Event is jointly sponsored by the Manchester Yacht Club and the Manchester Harbor Boat Club.
