Poets Corner: Our Only Mother

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — Come gather ’round you people and listen to my plea

Let’s share this world once more like one big family.

I am that gentle elephant,

A clumsy giant with a trunk

Whose ivory you crave to hunt.

I am your sister, I am your brother

The earth she is our only mother.

I am that dolphin light and free,

A flash of silver in the sea,

Your poisons flow right into me.

I am that nightingale who sings,

A voice of hope and early springs,

Caught in your turbine with broken wings.

I am your sister, I am your brother,

The earth she is our only mother.

We are the fields, we are the trees,

We are the flowers, we are the bees,

We are creation brought to its knees.

You rape us without guilt, you rob us without shame,

There’s no end to your greed, there’s no end to our pain.

You rape us without guilt, you rob us without shame,

The tears we cry of sorrow turn into acid rain.

We are your sister, we are your brother

We need to learn to love each other,

The earth she is our only mother.
