Essex Goings On

Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Press releases may be sent to Goings on, Gloucester Daily Times, 36 Whittemore St., Gloucester, MA 01930, sent via email to gdt@gloucestertimes.com or faxed to 978-282-4397. Please include a contact person’s name and telephone number and send at least two weeks prior to the event. The Times will do its best to run the announcement at least once prior to the event. Due to the volume of goings on listings received by the paper, listings are alternated once they run and the same listings are not printed every day.

Surplus items sale

The town of Essex will accept offers on surplus items in preparation for the Town Hall and TOHP Burnham Library improvement project. Items are primarily furniture, but include other miscellaneous items. All will be on public view at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, and interested parties can insert offer slips into envelopes affixed to each item. Review of offers is not allowed, so once deposited, offer slips must remain in envelopes and obstructed from view. Deadline for offers is 2 p.m., and the chief procurement officer will announce offers and declare apparent buyers. Should buyers fail to appear by 3 p.m. with a check in the amount of their offer, the town reserves the right to sell the item to the next highest bidder. All unsold items will be disposed of as junk.

Bake sale

St. John the Baptist Church will hold a bake sale Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon. Features breads, cakes, pies and baked beans.

Achievement award

Donations are being accepted for the Neil G. Ramsden Academic Achievement Award — a memorial award given by the teachers of Essex Elementary School to Essex high school seniors who graduated from EES, and are enrolling in at least a two-year program of study. The award is based on academic achievement, citizenship and service. Donations may be made to Essex Elementary School with “Achievement Award” on the memo line, c/o Susan Hardy, Essex Elementary School, 12 Story St., Essex, MA 01929.
