Essex Goings On

Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Press releases may be sent to Goings on, Gloucester Daily Times, 36 Whittemore St., Gloucester, MA 01930, sent via email to gdt@gloucestertimes.com or faxed to 978-282-4397. Please include a contact person’s name and telephone number and send at least two weeks prior to the event. The Times will do its best to run the announcement at least once prior to the event. Due to the volume of goings on listings received by the paper, listings are alternated once they run and the same listings are not printed every day.

Empty Bowl Dinner

The Open Door’s annual Empty Bowl Dinner will be held Thursday, May 9, 4 to 8 p.m., at Cruiseport Gloucester. Extra parking is available at Good Harbor Beach, with regular trolley service provided by CATA to and from the event site. Tickets are $15, $10 for children under 10, and are available at the door. The meal is simple soup, bread and a cookie. Guests can choose and keep a soup bowl handcrafted for this event. The bowl goes home as an unspoken reminder that somewhere someone’s bowl is empty. Happy As A Clam race

The Happy As A Clam 5K Road Race and One-Mile Fun Run, a fundraiser for the Essex Elementary PTO, will take place Friday, May 3, at Essex Elementary School, 12 Story St. Registration opens at 4 p.m., followed by the race at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $25 for the 5K, $8 for the fun run. Tree saplings

In celebration of Earth Day, the Essex Department of Public Works will provide tree saplings to residents Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Transfer Station. Kousa Dogwood and Rose of Sharon will be available. Supplies are limited and will be dispensed on a first-come, first-served basis. On this day, the DPW will accept brush, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Transfer Station. Limbs up to eight inches in diameter will be allowed. Open to Essex residents only. Call 978-768-6262.
