Poets Corner: Song of the Wife

Father of seven children

Drunken seed-bearer

Broken fingers, calloused hands

Touching like an animal this my body

Like fallen limbs of a tree

I, the earth, know my dream

To be a mother is not enough

To be touched by wings

Held in the belly of a bear by the wind

Cradled in grass without end

To be someone else somewhere

And you the lover who stayed through the day

Jim Dinsmore
