Paper cranes for peace

Celebrate the International Day of Peace on Friday, Sept. 21, 3:45 to 4:30 p.m., by making paper cranes at the Opportunity Center at Pond View Village in Gloucester. People of all ages are welcome to add their wishes for world peace in the Japanese tradition of origami cranes inspired by a young girl. A spaghetti supper will follow, 5 to 6 p.m., for anyone who would like to stay. Legion meeting

The Capt. Lester S. Help our homeless

The Action Emergency Homeless Shelter is accepting donations of deodorant, razors, feminine products, men’s sneakers and boots (larger sizes preferred), men’s jeans (larger sizes preferred), and socks. Senior Day Care

The Council on Aging sponsors Social Day Care sessions with supervised activities and programs three days a week, for seniors who are homebound and isolated, at the Rose Baker Senior Center, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Daily lunch and snacks are included. Yoga for seniors

The Gloucester Council on Aging provides gentle mat yoga sessions Tuesdays at 10 a.m., chair yoga on Wednesday at 12:15 p.m., and Thursday yoga at 10 a.m. each week at the Rose Baker Senior Center. Call 978-281-9765.

Handyman for seniors

The Council on Aging has a handyman, a retired carpenter, available to help Gloucester and Rockport seniors with inside and outside work at a reduced cost. Bay View Brotherhood

Gloucester United Methodist Church, 436 Washington St., is raising money through donations of new and used books, CDs, DVDs, records and audio books. The church has a drop-off donation container to collect these items. The church will be paid on an ongoing basis for all items collected in the donation container. OLGV religious education

Our Lady of Good Voyage Church will hold registration for religious education classes, for grades one through 10, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, before and after all weekend Masses, in the parish hall. Students must register each year. Advance registration forms are available at the entrance of the church. Cost is $30 per child, $40 for two or more children. Senior Steps

The Center for Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine at Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington St., offers a risk-reduction exercise program for seniors, ages 60 and over, with fear of falling and balance difficulty. A free 30-minute screening is required; plus a $3 fee per class. The Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet, in the basement of St. Ann School, corner of Prospect and Pleasant streets, is open Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Clothes Closet is made possible through the volunteer efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Holy Family Parish. CAST casting

Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe is seeking actors, technicians, stage and front of house help for its first production of the 2012-13 season. Performances take place the first two weekends of November at the Gloucester Stage Company. “Visiting Lear,” an adaptation of “The Tragedy of King Lear,” requires three actors to play multiple roles. One-act play runs 55 minutes. The Trustees of Reservations will host a “Wilderness to Special Place Walk: Ravenswood Through the Centuries” on Sunday, Sept. 9, 1 to 3 p.m., at Ravenswood Park, Gloucester. Health fair

Addison Gilbert Hospital and Northeast Senior Health will sponsor a free community health fair Tuesday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Rockport Senior Center, 58 Broadway, Rockport. The Rockport Health Department will offer free flu shots to those over 6 months of age. Informational tables will be provided by representatives of Pathways for Children, Action Inc., Rockport Police Department, Rockport Council on Aging, Needy Meds, SeniorCare, Den Mar Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Adult Foster Care, PACE, HAWC, Hospice of the North Shore and Greater Boston, VNA CareNetwork and Commonwealth Health. Theater in the Pines

Theater in the Pines celebrates its 25th anniversary season with its 80th production “Lend Me A Tenor” by Ken Ludwig at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport. This hilarious comedy, set in a hotel suite in Cleveland, revolves around Tito Morelli, an Italian star slated to play Otello, who succumbs to an accidental overdose of tranquilizers, setting mayhem in motion. Rick Doucette reprises the role of Tito, joined by a seasoned cast directed by Nan Webber. Performances are Friday, Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 15, 3 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 16, 3 p.m.

The Gloucester Housing Authority has announced a homeownership lottery for three newly-built condos at 10 Taylor Street, Gloucester. The 2-bedroom condos are spacious and have an extra huge finished, heated room in the attic with skylights and a harbor view. The two condos are priced at $125,000 each. The lower level is an open floor plan wheelchair-accessible condo with a separate bedroom and laundry room. Price: $90,000. All three condos have off-street parking. Meds disposal

On Saturday, Sept. 29, Healthy Gloucester Collaborative will sponsor the Gloucester Medication Disposal program in conjunction with the US Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration Annual Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Medictions may be dropped in the parking lot of the Rose Baker Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items Accepted are: prescription and over-the-counter medications, samples, vitamins, narcotics, liquid medications. Items not accepted are: sharps (can be disposed of 24-7 in lobby of Addison Gilbert Hospital), thermometers (can be disposed of at Gloucester Health Dept.), IV Bags, bloody or infectious waste, inhalers, Hydrogen Peroxide, personal Care Products. — 24/7 disposal is also available in the lobby of the Gloucester Police Department.

Cancer Clinic

A free skin cancer clinic will be held at the Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington Street, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from

2 to 3:30 p.m. Dermatologist Gary S. Rogers, M.D. will conduct the clinic, which will be held in the Gorton’s Specialty and Cancer Care Center, on the 4th floor. The American Cancer Society’s free “Look Good, Feel Better” program will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. at Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington St. A volunteer cosmetologist teaches female cancer patients how to use make-up, skin care, wigs, scarves and other accessories to overcome appearance-related effects of chemo. Blood Pressure

Free Blood Pressure Screenings are held each Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Addison Gilbert Hospital in Women’s Health. All are welcome to attend this free screening.

Child loss

Loss of a Child Support Group is available to parents who have lost a child at any age on the third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Longan Room of Addison Gilbert Hospital, (Washington Street entrance). There is no fee; please pre-register with Judi Dagle-Ernest at 978-879-9718.

Healthy Streets Program

Northeast Behavioral Health (NBH) Healthy Streets Outreach Program provides HIV testing, hepatitis C information, access to drug treatment, overdose prevention and Narcan training. All services, provided by NBH Healthy Streets Program, are available at Gloucester Family Health Center, 302 Washington St., Gloucester, lower level, Wednesdays, noon to 5 p.m. Call 978-236-0251.

Babson Library

Isabel Babson Memorial Library, 69 Main St., is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Named for Gloucester’s first midwife, the library’s books feature all aspects of family life including maternity, child care and women’s health. The collection is updated monthly. All are welcome to browse. Call 978-283-5624.
