Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Please include a contact person's name and telephone number and send at least two weeks prior to the event. The Times will do its best to run the announcement at least once prior to the event. 'Beauty and the Beast Jr.'

The Essex Elementary School will present Disney's "Beauty and the Beast Jr." on Thursday, Feb. 9, 6:30 p.m., and Friday, Feb. 10, 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Valentine crafts

Google earth

On Monday. Feb. 27, learn about the amazing uses of Google Earth with Dennis Dixon, at 6 p.m. at the TOHP Burnham Library. This free, downloadable program shows satellite imagery, so you can go on a 3D trip anywhere! To register, call 978-768-7410, or email: mes@mvlc.org.

Tea & empathy

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, come join our little "Tea and Empathy" support group, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., at Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 265 Essex St., Beverly, co-sponsored by Senior Care Inc. For information, call Rebekah Clark, Social Services, at 978-927-3260 x. 570.

Knitting nights

Library news

TOHP Burnham Library is featuring the following weekly winter programs:

Wednesdays, 10:15 a.m. — story hour for preschoolers, aged 3 to 5 years old; songs, stories, crafts and more!

Wednesdays, 3 to 4:30 p.m, — knitting for ages 8 and up; materials and instruction provided by talented knitters (until Feb. 15).

Girls' book group

TOHP Burnham Library welcomes girls, grades 7 to 10, to join a month long book group reading 'Heist Society' by Ally Carter, a fast paced. masterful novel of intrigue and suspense you won't want to miss! The group holds its next "mid-book" discussion on Monday Feb. 13, at 6 p.m., and concludes on Monday, Feb. 27. Email April at: awanner@mvlc.org, or call 978-768-7410.

Spaulding Fund

Spaulding Education Fund, a private, nonprofit established to aid Manchester Essex public schools, relies on private donations. Tax-deductible contributions may be made at www.spauldingeducationfund.org or mailed to the Spaulding Education Fund, Box 192, Manchester, MA 01944.

Monthly lunches

Seniors age 60 and over are invited to lunch at the Essex Senior Center on the first and third Thursday of the month. Lunch is provided by SeniorCare. A $2 donation is requested. For reservations, call 978-768-7932.

Meals on Wheels

SeniorCare Meals on Wheels program seeks volunteer drivers in Essex. Call SeniorCare's Nutrition Department at 978-281-1750 or toll-free at 1-866-927-1050.

Museum passes

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, tickets to the Museum of Fine Arts are now available. The passes are date specific, permitting two people entrance for $7 each, and may be reserved up to a week in advance by calling 978-768-7410 or e-mailing mes@mvlc.org.

Yankee Networkers

Yankee Networkers Chapter of BNI, a business referral organization, meets every Wednesday at the Farm Bar & Grill, 233 Western Ave. Business breakfasts are served from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Visitors are invited.

Business counseling

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce offers free small-business counseling at its office at 33 Commercial St., Gloucester, on the first and third Thursday of the month. Anyone starting a business can make an appointment with a representative from the Small Business Development Center of Salem State College. Call 978-283-1601 or e-mail info@capeannchamber.com.

Achievement award

Donations are being accepted for the Neil G. Ramsden Academic Achievement Award — a memorial award given by the teachers of Essex Elementary to Essex high school seniors who graduated from EES, and are enrolling in at least a two-year program of study. The award is based on academic achievement, citizenship and service. Donations may be made to Essex Elementary School with 'Achievement Award' in the memo, c/o Susan Hardy, Essex Elementary School, 12 Story St. Essex, MA 01929.

Winter parking ban

The winter parking ban will be in effect from now until April 1. During the ban, no parking is allowed from midnight to dawn on any street in town with the exception of Pickering Street. On Pickering Street, all-night parking is allowed only on the odd-numbered side of the street. Violators may receive a $25 parking ticket. Vehicles will be subject to towing during a storm.

Blood pressure clinics

The Essex Council on Aging holds a blood pressure clinic the third Thursday of each month, 10:30 a.m., at 17 Pickering St.

Maritime heritage event

On Saturday, Feb. 18, 1 to 3 p.m., the Essex National Heritage Commission, Maritime Gloucester and NOAA present NOAA maritime archaeologists Deborah Marx and Matthew Lawrence, with a 45-minute screening of the Science Channel's Viewers Choice Award winning documentary, "The Wreck of the Steamship Portland," followed by a presentation on Sanctuary maritime heritage projects and a tour of the Sanctuary's exhibit. The event is open to the public at Maritime Gloucester, 23 Harbor Loop. Reservations are required by Feb. 17. Cost is $5 for members, $10 for nonmembers. Peer Pals

The Manchester Essex Regional School District will hold screenings for all 3 and 4 year-old Manchester and Essex children whose parents are interested in the district's for preschool Peer Pal program for 2012-2013, on Wednesday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Manchester Memorial Elementary School. Current Peer Pals will receive priority in the lottery for 2012-2013 and need not participate in the screening. To register your child by phone, call Rosie Read at 978-525-6060.

New Year knitting

Knit in the New Year! A multi-generational group meets 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the T.O.H.P Burnham Library that runs until Feb. 15. All levels of knitters are welcome, from grade 2 and up. Snacks and yarn will be provided. Bring your own needles. Call 978-768-7410.

Messy Art!

The Essex Elementary PTO's 3rd Annual Messy Art Night is this Friday, Feb. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Essex Elementary, 12 Story St. Featured in the national publication, PTO Today, this hands-on creative event connects children with over 15 local participating artists, as they try their hands at a range of mediums from pottery to print making, collage, charcoal and more! Bake sale items and healthy treats will be available. Admission is $5; $20 per family. All proceeds go to the enrichment programming for the children of Essex Elementary. Democrats caucus

On Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. Democrats in Essex will hold a caucus at the Senior Center (17 Pickering St.) to elect delegates to the Massachusetts Party's nominating convention for 2012 U.S. Senate Democratic primary. Democrats registered before Dec. 31, 2011 are eligible, and the caucus will elect two delegates and two alternates, to be divided equally between men and women. Those not elected, who meet the qualifications, may apply to be add-on delegates in the following categories: youth, minority and disabled. The convention will be held on Saturday, June 2, at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield. For more information, call Lysa Leland, at 978-768-7006.
