Carolina Broach recently completed a week-long service trip to Guatemala, sponsored by St. Joseph’s College of Maine in Standish, Maine. In cooperation with Partners in Development (PID) of Ipswich, three faculty members and a 20-member student team volunteered in a village three hours west of Guatemala City. Nursing students helped to staff the medical clinic, while others built a concrete-block emergency house for a homeless family of seven and a multi-family concrete-block latrine for local villagers. The group also ran a children’s program for 150 participants and distributed roughly 1,250 pounds of humanitarian supplies. St. Joseph’s College has sent volunteer teams to Guatemala for the past nine years. Broach is a nursing student at the college.
