Gloucester Goings On

Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Adult Learning classes

The Adult Learning Initiative (ALI) at Gloucester’s Wellspring House in Gloucester starts Fall classes on Monday, Sept. 16, and you must be registered before then. ALI provides free classes in English, Math, Computer Skills, and Career Development, for those interested in attaining a GED, returning to school or finding a career. Act now, as the test changes in 2014 to longer, more expensive, computer-based version. If you have not completed the GED exam by the end of 2013, all prior scores will expire. Call Program Coordinator Mary Scofield for more information or to sign up for classes at (978) 281-3558, ext. 304. Wellspring House is located at 302 Essex Ave., Gloucester.

Annual Harbor Race

The Gloucester Gig Rowers and Maritime Gloucester’s 5th Annual Harbor Race is this Sunday, Sept. 15. The 3+ mile triangular course is open to Pilot Gigs, Whaleboats, Dories and other traditional rowing craft. The course starts and finishes at Niles Beach. Registration opens at 8 a.m., at Niles Beach. At 9 a.m. there is a Captain/Cox meeting and heats start at 9:30 a.m. Pre registration is strongly encouraged, contact Debe Holland at or 781 608-9006. The cost is $30 per person, $25 with advance registration.

Wine ‘n Cheese fundraiser

The Gloucester Democratic City Committee will host a wine and cheese fundraiser at a gracious private home in Magnolia on Thursday, Sept. 19, 6 to 8 p.m. Please join us to celebrate recent victories, watch the sun set over the harbor, and support the City Committee’s work. $70 for the first ticket, $60 per additional, at ActBlue link: 13, or send a check to Gloucester Democratic City Committee, P.O.
