NEWBURYPORT - Four musicians are trading New York for Newburyport this weekend.
Singing sisters The Roches, who grew up in and around Manhattan, and North Shore native Jake Armerding, who decided to test out life in the Big Apple recently, will be taking the stage of Newburyport's Rupert A. Nock Middle School Auditorium on Saturday night.
Opening: Jake Armerding
The Ipswich native just released his third CD, "Walking on the World," and recently returned home to New York from a tour of the East Coast and Midwest.
Armerding describes his music as Americana - "a little bit country, a little bit pop, bluegrass." He'll be performing mostly his own material on Saturday, with a few covers thrown in.
After several years of living and performing in Boston, Armerding decided to give Manhattan a try.
"I've been trying out the city for the last couple months, but I'm a Bostonian," he says. "I still play up here fairly often. I've always loved the area. But New York is such a great place to live. I'm sort of down here exploring this."
Armerding says he sees himself eventually moving back to Beantown.
"It's just a little bit of a different crowd," he says. "I was up in Boston last weekend and remembering all the things that are great about this city. Boston vibe you can't get anywhere else."
Headlining: The Roches
The Roche sisters - Maggy, Terre and Suzzy - have been singing together since childhood. The trio was close-knit and harmonious from the start.
"We all shared the same room and we weren't allowed to watch a lot of TV," Suzzy Roche says. "We were our own entertainment."
The girls got their start singing in church choirs before signing their first record deal when Suzzy Roche, the youngest, was 19. Now 50, she says the group has built up quite a repertoire of music: the sisters have recorded 16 albums and continuously tour the United States and Europe.
While they've been working on independent musical projects recently, they are currently reuniting for somewhat of a reunion tour.
The Roches, who write most of their own material and play piano and guitar as well as sing, have a unique sound. This weekend, the sisters will be singing music from their 30-year career, including songs from their most recent CD, "Moonswept," released in March.

"It's three-part harmony," said Suzzy Roche. "It's kind of unusual. There's not one lead singer with background singers."
