VIDEO: 'Ring of fire' solar eclipse

The solar eclipse that took place Sunday evening was an annular eclipse, one in which the moon blocks almost all of the sun. It leaves a ring visible, giving rise to the nickname "ring of fire" eclipse.

Some of the best viewing was in Asia, as with this video filmed in Japan. But the eclipse was visible in the western half of the United States. That made it the first annular eclipse visible in the continental U.S. since 1994.

For those who missed it, there will be a much shorter wait for the next solar eclipse in North America. A total eclipse will take place August 17, 2017 and it will be visible over much of the United States.
