Fishery safety program Friday at Coast Guard station

A number of fishing industry groups are pulling together to host a free safety and training program Friday at Station Gloucester on Harbor Loop.

The Fishing Partnership and New Directions Southcoast will be conducting what's being billed as a safety and survival training workshop for Massachusetts fishermen at the Coast Guard station beginning at 8 a.m.

The popular training is conducted by U.S. Coast Guard-certified fishing vessel safety instructors, and has trained more than 1,300 fishermen since it began in 2005.

Angela Sanfilippo, executive director of the Massachusetts Fishermen's Partnership and president of the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association, noted that commercial fishing in New England remains statistically "the most dangerous industry in the country."

"This hands-on training is essential to keep our fishermen as safe and healthy as possible," she said. "We hope every fishermen signs up for this important real life training."

Both breakfast and lunch will be provided and fishermen can obtain registration forms at Station Gloucester at 17 Harbor Loop, Gloucester; the Massachusetts Fishermen's Partnership office at 2 Blackburn Center, Gloucester, (978)-282-4847; and online at www.newdirectionssouthcoast.org, or by calling Liz Leal at 508-979-1616 x108.

The Fishing Partnership is a free membership nonprofit corporation organized to provide educational programs and services related to the health care, medical treatment and wellness of the Massachusetts fishing community.

The training program is also being sponsored by several fishing industry businesses.
