Crew safe at home after riding out storm

Boat's crew rides out storm on 11-day Georges trip

The Michael & Kristen, a 78-foot offshore lobster boat, arrived back in its home port of Gloucester Monday morning — 11 days after launching a trip to Georges Bank that spanned the new year turnover and exposed the boat and its five-man crew to some very choppy weather.

Winds were 50 to 60 mph, the snowfall was heavy, and there were some monster waves, according to the boat’s captain, Ronald Davis.

“We just rode out the storm,” Davis said, unconcerned. “Seas were 20 to 25 feet.”

The Michael & Kristen traveled to a place on Georges Bank, an elevated area of the sea floor, that was about 180 miles east-southeast of Gloucester. The boat also experienced some icing as it traveled through the Gulf of Maine.

Bad weather is nothing new to Davis, who has been fishing for 30 years and has captained the Michael & Kristen for 10.

Davis declined to give specifics of the boat’s shellfish catch this time out but said the trip was a success. He said his crew caught a large haul of lobsters and brought in a fair number of crabs.

“It was a good trip, and we made it home in one piece,” he said. “I guess we can’t complain.”

The crew of the Michael & Kristen won’t be on shore for long, Davis said.

“We’ll probably shove off Saturday,” he said, “and see what we can deal with then.”
