Fishing documentary premiering here

'Salt of the Sea' looks at NOAA, fishermen

A new documentary about the state of the fishing industry will have its North Shore premiere in Gloucester on Monday.

Filmmaker Tom Garber will attend the premiere of his documentary, “Salt of the Sea,” on Monday, April 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main St.

Garber filmed aboard several independently-operated commercial fishing boats in the Northeast.

“Salt Of The Sea” juxtaposes the working fishermen’s perspective on regulations with key players in federal fishery management. Topics include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s cod fish quotas, overzealous enforcement, and the scandal of $48 million lost.

“‘The Salt Of The Sea’ is about survival,” Garber says. “It is the real story of what it takes to make a living fishing New England waters.”

In the film, Garber captures the personalities, politics, and dangers of ground fishing in New England. It is a rare look at what happens when independent traditions clash with bureaucracy and corruption.

Garber will host a question session after the screening.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8.50 for students and seniors, and $7 for members, and are available at www.CapeAnnCinema.com or at the box office.

The next fishing film that the cinema will host is the acclaimed “Leviathan,” with a May date to be determined.
