The U.S. Coast Guard lifted a 60-year-old man from a Yankee Fleet charter vessel 19 miles off the southeast coast of Gloucester after the man was reported to be having chest pains.
According to Coast Guard reports, people aboard the Yankee Clipper radioed the Gloucester and Boston Coast Guard stations around 12:15 p.m. Thursday, and told them of the incident involving a passenger from New York.
The 75-foot boat was on a chartered fishing trip. The man was taken by Coast Guard helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was in stable condition today, local Coast Guard officials said.
Luis Munoz, chief warrant officer at Coast Guard Station Gloucester, said crews reached the Yankee Clipper in the 47-foot lifeboat some 45 minutes later and met the Yankee Clipper about 15 miles off the coast.
Munoz and another officer got onto the Yankee Clipper and found the man going in and out of consciousness and tried to stabilize him. Sector Boston's Jayhawk helicopter arrived soon afterward, and hoisted the man up and transferred him to Massachusetts General Hospital.
"We realized the gentleman wasn't doing better at all, we put him on a stretcher and then hoisted him up to the helicopter," said Munoz.
Munoz said he could not identify the man, but indicated that the stricken passenger had been on a fishing trip with his daughter. Munoz said the Coast Guard also brought the man's daughter back to the mainland and drove her to the hospital to be with her father.
