Wreckage of Foxy Lady II found

BOSTON — The Coast Guard tonight confirmed that the submerged wreckage of the 45-foot Foxy Lady II, a Gloucester-based scalloper, was discovered earlier today.

The Foxy Lady II and its two crewmembers, Wallace “Chubby” Gray Jr., 26, and Wayne Young, 50, were reported overdue Dec. 17. After a multi-day, multi-agency effort by aircraft, cutters, and rescue lifeboats, the Coast Guard’s active search and rescue operation was suspended, having not located the vessel or crew. The location of the vessel’s wreckage is within the area searched in December.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the state Marine Environmental Police received multiple reports of fishing vessels becoming entangled on an underwater obstruction while trawling in areas between Cape Ann and ProvincetownCoast Guard Sector Boston investigators, along with assistance and equipment from the Marine Environmental Police, began to assess the seabed. With the use of an underwater camera, the vessel was located and confirmed to be the Foxy Lady II.Coast Guard investigators are working closely with state and local agencies to further investigate the area and will thoroughly assess the findings as a part of the incident investigation.

A Coast Guard spokesman said it would be up to the vessel's owner whether the wreckage would be salvaged or not.
