Letter: A Rockport 'community treasure'

To the editor:

On Columbus Day, we celebrated with Toad Hall Bookstore at the Shalin Liu Performance Hall, honoring Toad Hall’s 40th birthday.

It was a spectacular celebration. But this letter comes to remind readers everywhere that bookstores are folding right and left, and in order to preserve our ability to stroll into Toad Hall, one needs occasionally to buy there or it will disappear as have so many others.

Toad Hall has always contributed a share of its net profits to environmental projects, and as an added bonus, studies show that, for every dollar spent locally, 68 cents goes back into the local economy. That’s not to India or China, but back to us here on Cape Ann.

Don’t give up Amazon; do, however, look at the price of an average book, add waiting time plus shipping — it’s not so much more to buy locally, and factor in an angel bonus for helping maintain a glorious bookstore).

But stroll into Toad Hall, browse and buy. If you are “booked” up, buy a card or something small.

Let’s begin saving our community treasures now.
