Letter: Wishing Richard nothing but fair winds

To the editor:

This past weekend, this newspaper lost a great writer and reporter, the fishing industry lost a great champion — and I lost a good friend.

Richard Gaines and I became friends through another friend’s car repair shop, as we both drove cars that were in, well, less than average condition.

Our friend Bill kept us both on the road, and through him we learned of each other’s occupations — mine as a fisherman for more than 50 years now, and his as a reporter for more than 40 years.

I would see Richard at different meetings on and about the fishing industry, and he always had time for more than a hello, and when asked, I would, as some know, offer my opinion on fishing.

Nancy has lost a husband, and Ray Lamont has lost a great reporter, but the fishing industry will miss you, Richard.

I can only offer you fairwinds, my friend.
