Letter: Mayor owes answers on fire safety

To the editor:

I would just like to take a brief moment to ask our current mayor one simple question, but before I do perhaps I should give a little insight as to why I, and many others who face the same problem, want an answer to this question.

My wife and I recently purchased a home in Magnolia, which we fell in love with from the moment we saw it. We love living here and, to be honest, there are few places I would rather be and I’m almost certain there is nowhere else my wife would want to be. We felt, and still feel, incredibly lucky to be in this position when so many others are barely making ends meet.

The one big downside about living in Magnolia, or any of the other outlying areas of the city for that matter, is the fact that the closest viable fire station to my own home is not even in Gloucester, it’s in Manchester.

Which brings me back to my question: Mayor Kirk, can you please tell my family and the other families this impacts why stockpiling “free cash”, an oxymoron if ever there was one, always seems to trump ensuring the safety of those living in these areas?

Is a small upgrade in our bond rating and the nominal savings that comes with that really more important than properly funding essential services vital to the safety of our community? Would it be, even if those savings were vast?

OK, so I lied — I guess that’s really three questions. But I’m hoping they are all worth your time to consider and hopefully answer.
