Letter: Clancy deserves school board re-election

To the editor:

I am writing to express my support for re-elect Kathy Clancy for School Committee and I encourage others to do the same.

My husband and I have worked with Kathy for more than seven years through the Gloucester Education Foundation.

Prior to being elected to the School Committee, Kathy served on the board for three years. After being elected to the School Committee, she stepped down from the GEF board, but continued working with the organization and currently chairs its important fund-raising committee. Kathy’s 20 years of financial management experience help her keep a watchful eye on school spending.

She chairs the School Committee’s Building and Finance subcommittee and serves on the West Parish building committee.

Additionally, she takes community input into her decision making and stands true to her principles and values in her votes. For example, when the current committee deliberated and voted to purchase iPads for school committee members, Kathy (and Val Gilman) voted “no” because she felt that our teachers needed technology more than the committee did.

I am a parent of a middle school student and a high school student. Kathy is a parent of a fourth-grader in Gloucester public schools. She brings that parent’s perspective to the school committee and that is important to me.

In the highly contested 2007 school committee election, three qualified, well-educated, but less known candidates – Kathy Purdy, Tom Fernandez, and John Sarrouf – sadly did not get elected.

With nine candidates running for six spots this time around, I’d like to encourage all voters to watch the debates on Cape Ann TV, and read the candidates statements.

If you do, I am sure you will agree that we need to re-elect Kathy Clancy.
