Letter: Turning Horribles into a Happiness Parade

To the Editor: How do you say thank you to a whole parade of bands — especially when the parade was supposed to be a “Horrible” one?

On July 3, I was sitting on my porch on Centennial Avenue, when the Legion Italian Band came by and played and sang “Happy Birthday.” Then all the other bands joined in!

This was the first time we, at the end of the parade, had the bands pass by playing music, except by the Firemen’s Band and our beloved Docksiders.

Usually, by the time they go over the railroad bridge, they are too tired to play. It was such a happy surprise! The wonderful Salah family and all their children came over and hugged me.

Although she will never admit this, I’m sure it was our guardian angel at the Rose Baker Senior Center who arranged this, turning into a Horribles Parade into a Happiness Parade.

To my beloved Docksiders, the Salahs and Dave Adams and my beloved nephew, Billy, and the Firemen’s Band who made sure we had music, God bless all of you so much for making this year so special.

ALICE LEWIS (age 86)
