I am writing regarding the story on the farmer’s market held over the weekend at the IGA site (the Times, Page 1, Friday, Jan. 24).
I believe it’s very nice that Rockport has vendors participating in a farmers’ market. However, after two years without a supermarket, this type of market is not essential, it’s just nice to have. We need more than “jellies and Jams” and homemade baked goods.
We are at a distinct disadvantage from other towns of the same population in the area. Ask anyone in town, young or old, and you get the same answer: We need a supermarket similar to the IGA. It is a disadvantage and inconvenience being without.
I find it hard to believe that there is not “concrete” interest in that space to service the town’s unique, captive market.
I would recommend that owner Jay Smith seriously consider refurbishing, upgrading and modernize this space, and then I am sure there would be viable options — perhaps Crosby’s Market out of Manchester.
This town would seem a perfect fit for its target market, and it would be a welcome addition by everyone in Rockport.
