Letter: Saluting 19 years of Waterways service

To the editor:

Many people do great work for this city as volunteers on many boards, committees and commissions that we have.

And last Wednesday night, one of our longest serving citizens stepped down after 19 years. He did it without any fanfare, just asked to make a statement at the end of Wednesday night’s meeting to inform the board that he was not seeking reappointment and this would be his last meeting. But I would like to thank Peter Bent for his many years of dedicated service and self sacrifice.

As a founding member and longtime chairman of the Gloucester Waterways Board, Peter has been instrumental in creating many improvements on Gloucester’s waterfront. Those include the float system at Cripple Cove, the first-class boat launch at Dun Fudgin, new floats and ramps at many of the city’s town landings, dredging at the mouth of the Annisquam River, and a new float system at St. Peter’s commercial marina and town float, to name a few.

It takes a great amount of work to get these projects from the idea stage into reality, and Peter worked tirelessly to make these things happen.

Peter’s historical perspective and expertise in all things boating will be missed greatly by the board.

Hopefully, after a break Peter will again choose to bring his talents, energy and integrity back to service in our fine city.

TONY GROSS

Gloucester

Chairman, Waterways Board
