Letter: Taking plastic bag hazards seriously

To the editor:

I am glad to see people taking steps to raise awareness of the danger posed by single-use plastic bags (See news story, Page 1).

Single-use plastic bags have represented a serious environmental problem in our society and we need to take action before it is too late.

The issue of excess waste is one that needs to be taken very seriously.

I have recently taken an interest in environmental issues and I have found that the damage we cause the environment is startling. Massachusetts alone burns and buries 5.4 million tons of trash every year. State Rep. Lori Ehrlich’s bill is a great stepping stone toward true respect of the environment.

There is even more action that Massachusetts can take though.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has recently considered lifting the 22-year moratorium on burning trash in Massachusetts, which would allow more incinerators to be built, and Governor Patrick has opened a public comment period for Massachusetts residents to respond to this proposal.

We have a chance in the state to make a difference and keep more incinerators from being built. Thank you so much for raising awareness in the North Shore about banning plastic bags and taking a step in the right direction.
