Letter: A parable and NOAA fishery disputes

To the editor:

It was good to read in the GDT that New Hampshire has joined the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in its lawsuit against the NOAA (the Times, Page 1, Monday, Sept. 16).

Now, I would like our newspaper to publish a running tab of fees paid to lawyers in this ongoing fiasco. I believe the total in dollars will equal the actual number of cod in the Atlantic Ocean.

Please forgive my simplicity. I believe both the Gloucester fishermen and the NOAA officials are Americans. I believe all Americans should be thankful our waters provide such a diversity and abundance of fish for our dinner tables. I believe many of us are aware of the tenacity, courage, and skill involved in the fishing vocation.

Arguing over fish is stupid. Going to court over fish is imbecilic. I suggest all parties involved stop behaving like adults and become more childlike. They can do this by believing a lesson Jesus of Nazareth taught his fishermen friends on the Sea of Galilee.

“When Jesus had stopped speaking, He said to Peter, ‘Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.’ But Peter answered and said to Him, ‘Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at your word I will let down the net.’

“And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.”
